JCB 3CX Contractor Specifications
For some the size of a JCB 3CX can be daunting but for others it is what makes the earth moving machine awe inspiring. Decorated in the iconic shades of yellow and black, each JCB 3CX was exactly the same specification as those used in industry.
The JCB 3CX Contractor has a 4 cylinder, 4.4 litre, 100 horsepower (74.5kW) diesel engine. The massive machine weighs just over 8 tonnes but is surprisingly nimble thanks to the power steering. Small turns of the steering wheel translated to fast and responsive changes to the front wheels, aiding manoeuvrability. Its turning circle is as little as 6.9 metres!
The JCB 3CX measures 5.63 metres in length with the backhoe retracted and the front bucket level on the ground. It also measures 2.24 metres wide and 3.61 metres in total height.
Whilst we didn't use the JCB 3CX for its intended purpose, the front loader bucket can scoop a full cubic metre of earth or rubble. The backhoe can dig to a depth of 5.46 metres, far deeper than its own height!
The cab offers stunning clarity of vision in all directions. The JCB 3CX uses the JCB Powershift transmission, making gear changes very simple indeed. A twist of a stalk on the left hand side of the steering wheel changes the gears up or down. Thanks to this system there was only a brake pedal and accelerator pedal.
The cab also features an air suspension seat, absorbing some of the force of racing over rough terrain.
